Ideas and Tips on Decorating with Shutters

Image
I absolutely LOVE shutters......I love them as unusable window covering options and I love them used separately as home decor. Doesn't this picture just make you happy??   source You can see in my home, I placed "Cafe" shutters in my dining room. Closed Open Like always, people all over Blogland have come up with fun and new ways to use leftover shutters. How about as a HEADBOARD!  Isn't that color gorgeous?  Very coastal feeling. How about covering an entire WALL with old shutters!!  Keep your eye out at thrift stores and garage sales! Source Of course, you can always just find ONE shutter and paint it to match your home decor and use it to : hang kitchen accessories  make a coat/towel rack or hang photos source West Furniture Revival I love the idea of using a piece like this for holding Christmas cards too!  Holly put little key hooks on this to use as an organi...

My Friends Shabby Chic Pergola and Woodsy Walkway

Image
Anyone need help with making their yard look beautiful?  I know I do!  My friend Valerie sent me pictures of her backyard and told me the story behind it all. Have you ever heard of an Akebia Vine or Lime Scotch Moss ?  You'll want to know about them after you see these pictures!!   Valerie's Backyard Can you believe that VINE!!!   Valerie told me it is the called an  A kebia vine.  It has a cream color in the spring that is very fragrant.  The rest of the year, the vine is just green.   If I remember right, that vine is only 5 years old.  I NEED that now!!!  I guess it's a very vigorous grower, so vigorous that in some sounthern (hot) states it's considered a "weed" but for us colder climate states it's a great choice.  For those who are wondering, we are a zone 5 and get LOTS of snow in the winter. I love the white furniture with red accents and the white candle chandelier. ...

The Big Reveal!!!–the PINK Clay Bedroom - My Girl's Room

Image
Alright, I know I am a little obsessive compulsive, I just can’t seem to stop!  I just spent 15 HOURS in 2 days doing my youngest daughters room in PINK American Clay . I had promised her from the first day we started the house, her room could be pink.  She is my little princess child, everything needs to be pink.  She had hoped that the entire house exterior would be painted pink.  (And our car, and the sky, and the dog…..you get the picture!) So, since all you lovely readers helped me win the last American Clay contest I spent my winnings on buying Porcelina Clay and tried out one of their new colors Coral Springs (actually, I lighted up the color and used one bag of Sugarloaf and 1/4 of a bag of Baton Rouge) Here is the BEFORE shot: (All walls done in Shaker Beige by Benjamin Moore) And the AFTER!: Can you see all the texture?  The look/feel of it is so amazing in person, I wish you could all come over to my ho...

Easy DIY Valance from Old Picture Frame

Image
During our  move,  glass from a long and narrow picture frame broke.  Normally I would have just tossed it (it was now useless – right?) but this blogging stuff really makes you look twice at EVERY thing you see.  To be honest with you, it’s pretty ridiculous, it’s hard to throw away anything now!!! So after staring at the frame a while, the crafty blogging light bulb went off and I realized I could totally use it for a valance in my daughters room! NEW valance from OLD useless Picture frame! All I did was throw out the broken glass, Used the cardboard that it came with and wrapped that in bubble wrap. (It’s just what was handy, as that was the material it had been wrapped up in for the move.) Next I took a pillow sham I bought at the thrift store and wrapped that around the bubble wrapped cardboard. I just taped the fabric to stay together. (if the fabric looks familiar, I used the other identical pillow sham to upholster this chair for h...

From Baby to Big Girl. Re-Purposing Furniture to Meet your Need.

Image
Today’s post is just about my 4 year old daughter’s “changing” table I bought 2nd hand off Craigslist.  She obviously doesn’t use the changing table any more (or let’s hope not!) so I had to think how I could change it to meet her needs now.  I normally don’t allow a lot of TV during the day but I am a pretty big fan of classic Disney Movies (the old ones!).  We had an extra TV and an old VIDEO player so I turned this changing table into a movie station.  (just drilled a hole in the back for the cords!) I can buy the great Disney classics between .75 ¢ – $1.50 at almost any thrift store so I have fun stocking up. . Since her “big girl" room has changed from a light wood to white I knew I wanted to spray paint the unit.  I bought a dual primer/paint from Wal-mart for $5.00 a can.  I used 4 cans!  I could have used a brush and paint but I wanted super easy so that’s how I’m justifying the $20.00 spent on paint!  (it WAS super easy and only...

How to Bring an Old Antique Chair back to Life!

Image
I see these types of chairs all the time at my local thrift store and on Wednesday they are half off bringing it down to a whopping 5 bucks a chair! The thing that I find interesting is that they NEVER have any cushioning on them…… I mean did they just not NEED a soft seat back then?  Did it make them sit up straighter???  Maybe that’s it?? I like to relax and slouch in a chair I guess so I need LOTS of cushioning……:-) Since I already posted how to add foam to a chair like this I’ll just link to the post.  I also showed you how to upholster fabric on a seat in this post so check those out if you need help! I always just lightly sand off or wipe down the blemishes and use my trusty stain pen on scratches.  It totally does the trick for what I need. And now for the fun AFTER (this really only took about 30 minutes!) Chair $5.00 Fabric $1.00 (was a pillow sham at the thrift store) Grand Total $6 bucks!!!   I bet you guy know where I a...
